The Tidal Basin of Socoa
At the foot of the Socoa Fort
Tucked away at the foot of the Socoa Fort, it was rebuilt in 1624 at the same time as the first tower which was originally this one. It was the first fishing port before relocating to the river mouth of the Nivelle. Today, it is bustling with vessels measuring less than 8m and sports trainières (Basque fishing boats), descendants of those which were used for whale hunting.
Subject to the rhythm of the tides, it houses one of the first tide gauges installed on the French metropolitan territory.
The vessels are moored to the anchorage on mother chains and a large channel crosses the port to give access to the slipway of Socoa where during big spring tides), the marina forklifts and the railroad which allows the launching of the concrete blocks protecting the sea wall like a fence around the bay, to compete for access to the water.
