The quays of Ciboure
The quays Pascal Elissalt and Gaston Pommereau
The quays Pascal Elissalt and Gaston Pommereau, who receive the fish ready for auction, are equipped with 4 landing cranes and a quay lift as well as two ice production and distribution machines. With its 4 refrigerators the cold capacity can be adapted according to the quantities fished. A computerised auction, which enables people to buy on site as well as online, takes place every day from Monday to Friday, except for bank holidays. Different services are offered to buyers from icing, placing it on pallets and filming according to their needs.
Equipped with heavy goods vehicles, their teams can go and collect products from the ports of Royan, Arcachon and Pasajes so that they can be sold under the fish market luzo-cibourien and thus drum up business when the boats fish too far from the port to come back at each tide. More than 100 different species are sold each year, but the flagship species are still hake (line caught or filet), red tuna, albacore, sole, sea bass and unusual species like shad and wild salmon from the Adour River.
The fish auction is reserved for authorised professionals, but the public can buy their fish from the fisherman in the sales area located directly opposite the entrance to the fish market. It opens from 7.30 am until the stocks last, or until 1pm.
You can visit the fish auction outside of sales hours by registering at the Centre of Interpretation of Maritime Architecture and Heritage which has opened in the former Chapelle et couvent des Récollets (chapel and convent) located next to the fish auction house, on the eponymous peninsula.
